Valentine's Day flowers
On Valentine's Day, Iowa's flower shops will be a burgeoning — make that booming — business.
Kelsey Thompson is the vice president of the Iowa Florists' Association and owns a floral store in Algona.
Thompson explains, "I pre-booked my flowers with the farms as early as October all the way through January.
" "We're placing our purchases early to ensure that we don't run out of supplies for our consumers."
She adds not everyone is searching for a dozen long-stemmed red roses, and it will be a long but successful day.
It will also be more expensive than last year's
bouquet
for those who desire the standard box of a dozen red roses.
My costs are up approximately 25-to-30 percent this year," Thompson adds.
According to a research conducted by the National Retail Federation, Americans spent more than $21 billion on Valentine's Day last year.
