Google has created a doodle to honour Indian educator and feminist
icon Fatima Sheikh, who was born in 191. In 1848, Sheikh co-founded the Indigenous Library
with Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, one of India's first girls' schools.
Fatima was born in Pune in 1831. She shared a home with her brother Usman
, and they welcomed the Phules after the couple was evicted for
trying to educate lower castes. The Sheikhs opened the Indigenous Library.
For class, religion, or gender, Savitribai Phule and Fatima Sheikh taught
marginalised Dalit and Muslim women and children.
The Satyashodhak Samaj movement grew out of the Phules' efforts to educate lower caste children.
